Dear Fairtrade Towns,

The next European Parliament elections are being held on the 22 May 2014 and we need your help to lobby your Member of the European Parliament (MEP) candidates.

How can we make a difference?
You can join the campaign by asking this year’s MEP candidates in your region to sign this Fair Trade Manifesto.

A list of candidates is available here or if you’re not sure who’s standing in your region you can email us at vote4FT@fairtrade.org.uk

Why influence the European Union (EU)?
Many important decisions and policies affecting the livlihoods of the producers in the global south happen at the EU. MEPs therefore have ability to put in place a system to fight against Unfair Trading Practices in EU-bound supply chains for example. If all MEP candidates in this election sign the Fair Trade  Manifesto to ensure their support to the principles of Fair Trade we will have a strong position to promote pro-Fair Trade policies during the next parliament. Find out more here.

What can you do?
– Write to your local MEP and ask them to sign the manifesto. Download our template letter here and attach a copy of the manifesto.
– Contact your MEP and arrange to meet with him/her to discuss the issue of unfair trading practices
– Invite your MEP to a Fairtrade event you are hosting.

Best of luck with your campaigning
